A volcanic formation, with sensory components, is what you will experience when visiting the lava tunnels.
The lava Tunnels were formed when the surface layer of the lava flow was cooled by getting into contact with colder atmospheric air. As they cooled and hardened, they acted as an insulating material preventing the solidification of the hot material that continues to flow under it. At the end of the eruption and once all the lava had passed, an empty tube was formed as a result. Due to cooling cracks, tremors, they continue to fracture the upper part of the tube, collapsing, and so its interior got exposed.
Some tunnels can be found in the different farms located in the rural towns of Bellavista and Santa Rosa.
There is also a small tunnel called mirador, next to the road to Baltra, 3 km from Puerto Ayora.
It is not an activity suitable for the claustrophobic, or for people with little mobility. In addition to going up and down between the stones, in one part you have to crawl on the ground, therefore it is advisable to wear clothes that can get dirty.
The whole tunnel is lit up.
