Santa Cruz Island is one of the main ecological, scientific, and tourist centers of the Galápagos archipelago, representing a unique balance between human presence and environmental conservation. It is part of the Galápagos National Park, considered the best-preserved archipelago in the world, where approximately 95% of the territory is protected, safeguarding an extraordinary biodiversity of endemic flora and fauna.
Santa Cruz is distinguished by the diversity of its ecosystems, ranging from white-sand beaches and crystal-clear waters, such as Tortuga Bay, to high-altitude volcanic areas covered by Scalesia forests, lava tubes, and craters formed by ancient eruptions. This variety of landscapes is home to emblematic species such as giant tortoises, Darwin’s finches, land iguanas, and a wide array of birds and reptiles found nowhere else in the world.
The island is also the scientific heart of the archipelago, as it houses the Charles Darwin Research Station, where research, breeding and conservation programs for endangered species are developed, as well as environmental education initiatives aimed at both visitors and the local population.
